1. Pump on schedule
Book pumping every 3 to 5 years, or when your inspector says the sludge is getting high. Don't wait for a backup.
2. Get it inspected
A professional check every 1 to 3 years catches cracked baffles and drain field problems early.
3. Only flush toilet paper
"Flushable" wipes, paper towels, diapers, cotton and floss don't break down and clog the system.
4. Keep grease out
Cooking oil and fat float in the tank and can clog the drain field. Wipe pans and put grease in the trash.
5. Go easy on the garbage disposal
Food scraps add solids fast. If you use a disposal, you may need to pump more often.
6. Save water
Fix dripping taps and running toilets, and use efficient fixtures. Less water gives the tank time to work.
7. Spread out laundry
Several loads in one day can flood the drain field. Do one or two loads a day instead.
8. Skip harsh chemicals
Large amounts of bleach, drain cleaners and solvents can kill the bacteria the tank depends on.
9. Protect the drain field
Don't park or build on it, plant only grass nearby, and send gutter water away from it.
10. Know the warning signs
Slow drains, gurgling pipes, sewage smells or soggy, extra-green grass over the field mean it's time to call a pro.
